How to read these numbers

All figures follow the US magazine convention: acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph with a 1-ft rollout subtracted, on a prepared surface, with launch control where fitted. That is why they often beat the manufacturer's own claims for the same car. Weather, altitude, tires and fuel load can each add a couple of tenths.

Notice how the leaderboard has changed: the quickest sedans in the table are electric, and a family EV like a Model 3 Performance now out-launches most classic supercars. Combustion still rules past 150 mph, but 0-60 has become an EV benchmark.

Why do published 0-60 times differ between sources?

Three reasons: rollout (US magazines subtract the first foot of movement, worth about 0.3 s), conditions (surface, temperature, altitude), and technique (launch control versus a casual start). Manufacturer claims are sometimes conservative, sometimes optimistic. The figures here are typical independent test results with rollout, so treat them as accurate to roughly plus or minus 0.3 s.

What counts as fast in 2026?

Under 3 seconds used to be supercar territory; now several EV sedans do it. As a rough guide: under 3.0 s is exotic-level, 3-4.5 s is seriously quick, 4.5-6 s is quick, 6-8 s is average for modern cars, and over 8 s feels slow in today’s traffic.

Do 0-60 times depend on the driver?

With modern launch control and automatic gearboxes, much less than they used to. EVs are the extreme case: anyone can repeat their best time. Manual transmission cars still vary by a few tenths with driver skill, and all cars are sensitive to surface grip.

Is 0-60 the best measure of how quick a car feels?

It is the most quoted, not the most complete. Rolling acceleration (30-70 mph) matters more for real-world passing, and power-to-weight tells you how a car behaves once moving. But as a single comparable number with data for nearly every car, 0-60 remains the standard.
